Do you want to request your credit registration because you want to take out a mortgage, loan, or other credit? The Bureau Krediet Registratie (BKR) monitors which loans and credits you have. A negative credit registration can prevent you from obtaining a new loan or mortgage.
In this guide, we explain step by step how to request your credit registration, what the various codes mean, and what you can do if you have a negative credit registration.
What is a credit registration?
The BKR registers almost all consumer credits of consumers in the Netherlands. Think of:
personal loans
revolving credits
overdraft on your current account
phone subscriptions with device on instalment
purchases on instalment or "buy now, pay later"
mortgages with payment arrears
A credit registration itself is not necessarily negative. Only when a special code is added (such as A2, A3, etc.) do we speak of a negative credit registration that can limit your creditworthiness.
Request your credit registration in 3 steps
You can request your credit registration via the official BKR website.
Is requesting your credit registration free?
Yes, you can view your own BKR data online for free once a year via the official BKR website (bkr.nl). This is a digital overview and there are no costs involved as long as you choose the online option. If you prefer to receive a paper overview, the BKR charges a small fee for this. Online login is done securely via iDIN, so have your bank details at hand if you want to view your overview for free. This is done easily in three steps:
Step 1: Go to the BKR website
Visit the BKR website (bkr.nl).
Choose the option to view your data.
Log in with your bank account (iDIN) or another available login method.
Step 2: Fill in your details
You fill in, among other things:
your name
your email address
your home address
This usually takes only one minute.
Step 3: View your BKR overview
After logging in, you will immediately see:
which credits are registered
whether any special codes are listed
Would you like a paper overview? You can have an official BKR overview sent by post for a fee.
Note: check the special codes
On your overview, you will usually see a heading "Special code". If there is a code next to your name, there is a (former) payment arrears or special circumstance. These codes can cause problems when:
applying for a mortgage
taking out a personal loan
increasing a credit limit
This is what the BKR codes mean
The BKR uses letters and numbers to make it immediately clear what exactly is going on. Some common codes:
A – Arrears: you have (had) a payment arrears.
H – Recovery: you have caught up on the payment arrears.
1 – A payment arrangement has been made and you are catching up.
2 – The credit provider demands the entire remaining amount at once.
3 – The debt has been (partially) written off or forgiven.
4 – You have been unreachable for the credit provider for a prolonged period.
5 – Minor arrears on your mortgage.
9 – There is a legal dispute with the credit provider.
When are you registered and not registered with the BKR?
You do get a credit registration for, among other things:
loans longer than 1 month and higher than €250
personal loans
revolving credits
phone subscriptions with device on instalment
overdraft on your current account
"buy now, pay later" at certain online shops
mortgage with payment arrears
You do not get a credit registration for:
student debt with DUO
payment arrears with the Tax Authority
debt with your health insurer
fines from the CJIB
a mortgage that you pay off as agreed (without arrears)
