Labour Migrants More Often Victims of Workplace Accidents

Labour migrants face a 10% higher risk of workplace accidents than other employees. Learn about the causes, risks, and how to protect your rights.

Migrant workers in the Netherlands have a greater chance of becoming victims of workplace accidents than other employees. Figures from the Dutch Labour Inspectorate show that an average of 126 workplace accidents per 100,000 jobs are reported annually. For migrant workers, however, this figure is 137 per 100,000 jobs – nearly 10% higher. Moreover, fatal workplace accidents occur twice as often among migrant workers.

At Arslan Advocaten, specialized in personal injury cases, we notice that many workplace accidents involving migrant workers go unreported. This makes the problem not only serious but also difficult to fully map.

Why are migrant workers at greater risk?

Although the Dutch Labour Inspectorate does not identify a specific cause, research from our firm and other involved parties points to several factors contributing to the increased risk of workplace accidents among migrant workers:

  1. Insufficient or missing instructions in their own language
Migrant workers regularly receive safety instructions that they do not understand because they are not offered in their native language.

  2. Lack of safety measures
In some cases, essential safety measures are ignored or not adequately implemented.

  3. Dangerous work
Migrant workers are more often deployed for physically demanding and dangerous work, especially in sectors with little supervision of working conditions.

These factors not only increase the risk of injury but also make migrant workers a vulnerable group within the Dutch labor market.

Sectors with increased risk

Workplace accidents among migrant workers mainly occur in sectors with labor-intensive and often unskilled work. These include:

  • Metal industry
  • Slaughterhouses
  • Agriculture
  • Fishing

Expats, who generally work in higher positions at large companies, fall outside this risk group. It is primarily migrant workers in the above-mentioned sectors who face an increased risk of workplace accidents.

What can you do after a workplace accident?

As a migrant worker, it is important to know your rights and what to do after a workplace accident. An employer is legally obligated to ensure a safe working environment. If it turns out that your employer has fallen short in this regard, you are entitled to compensation for the personal injury suffered.
