Many young people think that holiday pay is only for “real jobs”. Or that you are not entitled to it with a part-time job. That is incorrect.
Even with side jobs and part-time work, you are almost always entitled to holiday pay.
In this blog we explain when you are entitled to holiday pay, how it is calculated, when it must be paid out and what you can do if that does not happen.
Are you entitled to holiday pay with a side job?
Yes.
Are you working? as:
student
part-timer
on-call worker

The law makes no exception for young people.
How much holiday pay do you get?
The main rule is:
👉 at least 8% of your gross salary.
Sometimes it is more, for example due to a collective labor agreement or agreement in your contract.
That percentage applies about:
hours worked
salary you have received
sometimes also about overtime and allowances
When must holiday pay be paid?
Usually this happens:
once a year, often in May or June
But with part-time jobs we see we often offer something different:
payment per month
holiday pay “built up” on the pay slip
payment at the end of employment
All forms are allowed, provided it is clear and the money is actually paid.
Holiday pay per month: what should you pay attention to?
Are you paid? Holiday pay paid monthly?
Please note:
Is it shown separately on your pay slip?
Is the percentage correct?
Is it not “hidden” in your hourly wage?
Some employers act as if it is included in the salary, but that is not allowed.
What if you stop your part-time job?
At the end of your contract, the following applies:
all accrued holiday pay must be paid out
even if you resign yourself
also for short employment contracts
Do you not get this? Then that is incorrect.
Frequent mistakes made by employers
Among young people we often see:
not paying holiday pay at all
saying that it “does not apply to part-time jobs”
unclear pay slips
too low percentage
forgotten payment at the end employment
