How does divorce work in the Netherlands?

You can only divorce through the court and always need a lawyer. Two forms: joint petition (agreed) or unilateral petition (disputed).

Alimony: partner maintenance (max 5 years) and child support
Property division: house, pensions, savings, debts
Parenting plan: required for minor children (residence, visitation, child support)

Joint divorce: €1,500-€3,000. Contested: €3,000-€10,000 per partner. Court fees: ~€340. Subsidized legal aid may be available.

Do I need a lawyer for divorce?

Yes, a lawyer is mandatory for divorce in the Netherlands. Only a lawyer can file the petition. For joint petitions, one shared lawyer is possible.

How long does a divorce take?

Joint divorce: 3-6 months. Contested divorce: 6-18+ months depending on disputes.
