How does divorce work in the Netherlands?

You can only divorce through the court and always need a lawyer. Two forms: joint petition (agreed) or unilateral petition (disputed).

What gets settled?

  • Alimony: partner maintenance (max 5 years) and child support
  • Property division: house, pensions, savings, debts
  • Parenting plan: required for minor children (residence, visitation, child support)

Costs

Joint divorce: €1,500-€3,000. Contested: €3,000-€10,000 per partner. Court fees: ~€340. Subsidized legal aid may be available.
